Vision Statement

The Independent Hill student will be educationally, physically and emotionally prepared to their maximum potential for successful community integration. Graduates will be transitioned into adult lifestyles as developmentally appropriate.

Mission Statement

Independent Hill School (a separate special education facility), will prepare students for adult life utilizing: Academic/Vocational instruction, Technology, Modeling, Logical thinking, Workshops, Community job sites, Support specialists, Physical training, Sports and leisure activities, Self-help skills, Special Olympics, Methods to stimulate emotional well-being, Teach respect for self and others, Develop health self-esteem, and Enhance coping mechanisms and adaptability to change.

Independent Hill School will encourage and elicit parental involvement at all levels of the educational and transitional process, allowing awareness of all options and opportunities.

Vision Statement


At PACE East Program, we believe that all students have the right to be educated to achieve their fullest potential. Students are entitled to an environment where they have the opportunity to be empowered as learners while developing at their own rate. Through the use of technology and problem-solving skills students will be prepared for post- graduate options. Students are expected to take an active role in their education-thus enabling them to become productive members of a multicultural and global society.

Mission Statement

PACE East Program is committed to providing the following in order to achieve our vision:

      1.      A safe and nurturing environment that is conducive to learning

2.      A small highly structured environment that is conducive to learning

3.      Individual and group counseling

4.      Able to work with students with their physical wellness

5.      Work cooperatively with the base schools and outside agencies

6.      Teacher works towards SOL goals and graduation requirements through the use of approved PWCS curriculum maps

7.      Smooth transitions into the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)

8.      Using the current special education child study/eligibility process

9.      Use of a level system to track the progress of individual students

10.  Teachers make accommodations for academic success

11.  Low staff-to-teacher ratio

12.  Modeling respect for diverse cultures

13.  Teaching proficiency in the use of technology as a tool

14.  Teaching decision-making through the use of behavioral management techniques
